BSNL launches video telephony
The Bharat Sanchar
Nigam Limited launched video telephony services across Tamil Nadu on Friday to
mark the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD), which
falls on May 17. Addressing a press conference here, A. Shajahan, Principal
General Manager, BSNL Coimbatore, said that through the Video and Voice on
Broadband (VVoBB) service, BSNL customers can have a face-to-face interaction
at high quality compared to similar services available online.
As it can accommodate
up to five persons, the VVoBB would provide high quality resolution for video
conference. Nine persons can come on the same video-conference, but the images
of only five will be displayed, he said. Unlike other similar services, the
VVoBB does not require a desktop computer or laptop. This service could also be
used to perform video-surveillance.
While broadband
customers can immediately avail this service, he said that a ‘port’ would have
to be installed for others. While aimed primarily at business, both private and
public sector units, he said that this service will also provide a boost to
telemedicine and tele-education services. Mr. Shajahan said that new business
plans of the BSNL include launching high speed ‘cypher cafes,’ renting out its
premises for other business concerns such as ATMs and providing customised
in-plant training to engineering college students.
The price of the
VVoBB telephone started from around Rs.15.000 for a four-inch screen to Rs. 4
lakh for a 22-inch screen. The call charge would be Rs. 2.50 per minute. The
present position of the BSNL in Coimbatore was 2.25 lakh landline connections,
of whom 69.618 had broadband. They were offered speeds ranging from 16 to 24
mbps.
