Government wants Skype to set up servers in India

No comments :

India may ask all firms offering internet telephony, including popular online phone service provider Skype, to set up servers in the country if they want to continue offering this facility here. The move is aimed at allowing law enforcement and security agencies get access to newer forms of communications that cannot be tracked by traditional monitoring systems.

The Centre has also decided to ask internet service providers and mobile phone companies to 'segregate Internet Protocol (IP) addresses on a state basis', a step that will allow the government to block social networking sites or any other websites and even internet telephony on select states or regions in the country. These decisions were taken in a home ministry meeting on April 23 that was attended by representatives from Intelligence Bureau, other security agencies, top police forces and senior officials from telecom and IT departments. ET had reviewed the minutes of this meeting.

"Any service provider, who provides communication service in India via any media through Voice-over-Internet Protocol ( VoIP), should be mandated to be registered in India, having its office, server located in the country and therefore, subject to Indian laws. Necessary provisions to this effect may be incorporated through amendment in Indian Telegraph Act, 1885 and Information Technology Act, 2000," the minutes of the meeting said.

This solution was proposed after both the telecom and IT departments said it would be not possible to intercept internet telephony communications on a regional basis, or even block these in specific states and regions, due to 'unregulated internet architecture in India and highly decentralised encrypted structure of Skype'.The minutes of the April 23 meeting also add that segregating IP addresses on a regional basis will 'facilitate home secretaries to allow lawful interception in areas under their jurisdiction under the Indian Telegraph Act and Information Technology Act'. According to international media reports, Microsoft-owned Skype, which has been popular with those who did not want their communications to be tracked by governments, had last year made technical upgrades and also expanded cooperation with law enforcement authorities.

India has been pushing IT majors and even handset companies to set up servers here resulting in the likes of BlackBerry and Nokia setting up interception facilities here to help intelligence agencies monitor communications on these devices. At the same time, the telecom department's research body C-DOT has also begun installing indigenously developed monitoring solutions on the networks of internet service providers (ISPs) and telcos.

During the April 23 meeting, it was also decided that all 'ISPs and telcos must designate a nodal officer in each state with access to GGSN gateway. In common parlance, the nodal officer must have access to that part of the network that is responsible for the delivery of data packets from and to the mobile stations within a geographical service area.

"The telecom department will also ensure that each state will have facilities for lawful interception of internet," the minutes add. India has been seeking to arm itself with the technological capabilities to block Twitter and other social networking sites in select states and regions after the government failed in its attempts last year to shut down social media in some parts of the country. The governnment's efforts had failed after telcos refused to comply stating that they lacked the technology to bar websites on a state-by-state basis. On August 23 last year, the home ministry had asked the information technology ministry to direct ISPs and telcos to block Twitter in eight states — Kerala, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh — amid concerns that the popular social networking website was being used to fan communal tensions following violence in Bodo-dominated areas of Assam.

But the Twitter ban order could not be implemented after telcos said they could only block websites and social networking sites on a national basis. Following this, in an August 27 meeting in the Prime Minister's Office, which was attended by heads of all intelligence agencies as well as representatives from the ministries of home, telecom and IT, the government decided to set up an 'appropriate regime' to address issues related to blocking content on the internet and social media in a 'smart, timely and consistent manner'.The new regime was to work out an effective cyber monitoring system, lay out guidelines and operating procedures on the nature of online content that would be blocked and also specify penalties for perpetrators.

No comments :

HP has unveiled Split x2 Windows 8 tablet, similar to the HP Envy x2 introduced last year. The Split x2 is an upgrade on the Envy x2 in many ways. Instead of the Atom processor, the x2 comes with an option of 3rd Generation Intel Core i3 or i5 processors. The 11.6-inch has become a 13.3-inch screen, though the resolution remains the same at 1366x768. HP Split x2 comes with up to 128GB SSD storage.

Also included dual-speakers, 8-megapixel rear shooter and a front camera with full-HD video recording capabilities, just like Envy x2. Disappointingly, the RAM stays the same at 2GB, though users have the option to upgrade. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, but no NFC, which is present in the Envy x2.Like the Envy x2, the Split x2 comes with a keyboard dock that includes a MicroSD reader, Combo audio jack, 1 USB 3.0 port, 1 USB 2.0 port, HDMI port and SD card slot. Interestingly, the dock also includes 500GB of hard disk storage, which makes it perfect for storing your media.

The HP Split x2 will join the HP Envy x2 and the Android-based SlateBook x2 - announced alongside the HP Split x2 - as part of HP's detachable PC portfolio. Split x2 is expected to be available in the United States in August with a base price of $799.99. No word yet on India price and availability.

Cyber attacks against US banks more severe than most realize

No comments :

The series of cyber attacks that repeatedly knocked major US banking websites offline in the past nine months has been more powerful than the general public realizes, government officials and security experts told the reporters at Cybersecurity Summit.

A self-described activist group, Cyber Fighters of Izz ad-din Al Qassam, has claimed credit for the distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks that took down the websites of more than a dozen US banks for hours or even days at a time. Members of congressional intelligence committees say the attacks are sponsored by Iran and show its growing capability in cyberspace.US banks, Internet service providers and security companies "have had trouble keeping up with the recent DDoS attacks that have had the sophistication and the level of resources that a nation-state entity like Iran can devote to them," House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers told reporters.

In three waves of attacks since September, consumers have reported inability to conduct online transactions at more than a dozen banks, including Wells Fargo & Co, Citigroup Inc , JPMorgan Chase & Co and Bank of America Corp . Banks have spent millions of dollars to fend off the hackers and restore service. In DDoS attacks, thousands of computers all try to contact a target website at the same time, overwhelming it with meaningless connections until it is rendered inaccessible. The banks have said little about their frantic efforts behind the scenes to restore websites, and industry groups have generally played down the impact and severity of the attacks.

Google Plus gets 41 new features

No comments :

The 41 new features being added to Google Plus beginning Wednesday will draw upon the computing power, machine learning, algorithms, semantics analysis and other innovations that established Google's search engine as the most influential force on the Internet.

The most compelling new attraction may be a new photo-management tool that promises to test how much control people want to cede to computers. It will also further blur the lines between a real moment in time and augmented reality.

Google promises the feature will pick out the best shots from a wide assortment of photos. The automatic photo selection is done by calling upon Google's knowledge of the elements that make up a visually pleasing picture, coupled with facial recognition technology and a vast database that helps tie together the relationships of people appearing in a photo. Google says its computers will recognize the best photos featuring family members or close friends of a person who uploads a bunch of pictures to Plus.

If the photos don't look quite right, Google is promising to enhance them, taking over a job that typically requires people to buy and master special photo editing software such as Adobe System Inc.'s Photoshop, Apple's iPhoto or Google's Picasa. Computer-controlled editing tools will automatically remove red eyes, soften skin tones, sharpen colors and adjust contrast. Google offers something similar through an "I'm Feeling Lucky" button on Picasa.

In an effort to get more photos onto the Plus network, Google is offering to back up all pictures taken on a mobile device, as soon as they're snapped. To accommodate the increased volume, Google Plus will now provide each account holder with up to 15 gigabytes of storage for full-resolution photos. Gundotra believes Plus' management tools will be compelling because they are designed to save people the time and trouble of choosing and editing photos. Google Plus users will be able to compare all original photos with the versions altered by computers. The auto-enhancement tool can also be turned off.

Another new photo feature promises to stitch together a sequence of photos taken of the same group of people or a panoramic scene. This stitching system can be used to create a single photo that pulls the best shots of everyone featured in a series of pictures. It will also produce an animated clip featuring the motions of people captured in a succession of photos taken against the same background. By appealing to people's photo fondness, Google is hoping to make Plus a more useful and fun place to hang out than Facebook. But Google Plus still hasn't proven it can become as much of a magnet as Facebook, largely because people had already established their online social circles at Facebook.

Google Plus has built up a broad swath of accountholders since its introduction nearly two years ago, mainly because so many people already had set up Google logins while using the company's Gmail or other services. Gundotra announced Wednesday that Google Plus now has 190 million users who interact on the service each month, up from 135 million in late December. About 390 million people log in to Google Plus each month, but that includes a large number who have tied their Gmail accounts to the social networking service. Facebook says it has about 1.1 billion active users.

As such, Google has a long way to go. Facebook has claimed the title of being the world's largest photo-sharing site for years, and with last year's purchase of Instagram only propelled it further ahead. Instagram has 100 million monthly active users, up from 22 million when Facebook agreed to buy it last spring. Rather than offer powerful editing tools or high-quality pictures, Facebook became the most popular way to share the photos online simply because it is the most popular place to hang out online. Today, users upload more than 350 million photos to Facebook each day.

Over the years, it enhanced the quality of the photos displayed, too, and has recently redesigned its site to make photos more pronounced. Instagram, meanwhile, offers an easy-to-use mobile app and playful filters users can apply to snapshots of friends, quirky buildings or plates of food. Google Plus is getting a new look just two months after Facebook spruced up its news feed - the centerpiece of its service - to feature photos more prominently and generally make posts look more like articles in a magazine or newspaper. Unlike Facebook, Google says there are no current plans to show ads on the revamped Plus.

In another change aimed at attracting more traffic, Google Plus will start to display automatic hash tags to identify the main topic being discussed in a post or featured in a photo. Google is using its understanding of semantics and photo-scanning technology to figure out what is going on. Individuals will still have an option of editing or forbidding a hash tag from appearing if they don't agree with Google's automatic selection. Clicking on the hashtag will take Google Plus users to other posts and pictures bearing the same marker. Similar content being shared by family and friend is supposed to show up first, thanks to the same ranking system that Google's search engine uses to pick out the most relevant results. Facebook doesn't currently use hash tags, though there have been reports that it is working on incorporating them to its site, just as Twitter and Instagram already do.

BSNL launches video telephony

No comments :

The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited launched video telephony services across Tamil Nadu on Friday to mark the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD), which falls on May 17. Addressing a press conference here, A. Shajahan, Principal General Manager, BSNL Coimbatore, said that through the Video and Voice on Broadband (VVoBB) service, BSNL customers can have a face-to-face interaction at high quality compared to similar services available online.

As it can accommodate up to five persons, the VVoBB would provide high quality resolution for video conference. Nine persons can come on the same video-conference, but the images of only five will be displayed, he said. Unlike other similar services, the VVoBB does not require a desktop computer or laptop. This service could also be used to perform video-surveillance.

While broadband customers can immediately avail this service, he said that a ‘port’ would have to be installed for others. While aimed primarily at business, both private and public sector units, he said that this service will also provide a boost to telemedicine and tele-education services. Mr. Shajahan said that new business plans of the BSNL include launching high speed ‘cypher cafes,’ renting out its premises for other business concerns such as ATMs and providing customised in-plant training to engineering college students.

The price of the VVoBB telephone started from around Rs.15.000 for a four-inch screen to Rs. 4 lakh for a 22-inch screen. The call charge would be Rs. 2.50 per minute. The present position of the BSNL in Coimbatore was 2.25 lakh landline connections, of whom 69.618 had broadband. They were offered speeds ranging from 16 to 24 mbps.

Microsoft's Outlook.com adds Google chat integration

No comments :

In a rare bit of cooperation, Microsoft's Outlook.com is giving users of its free email service the option of logging into Google Chat to exchange instant messages and engage in audio or video conversations. This was  announced Tuesday represents an uneasy alliance in the midst of a typically contentious relationship between Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc.

Microsoft is framing its embrace of Google Chat as an example of how it's trying to help connect people who rely on various services to interact with one another. Both Outlook.com and Google Chat are offered for free as way for Microsoft and Google to attract more online traffic to its advertising-supported services.

With the latest addition, Outlook.com account holders will have three different ways to interact with their friends and family in real-time discussions. They have already been able to use Microsoft's own Skype chat service and Facebook's messaging service. Microsoft closed its Messenger chat service earlier this year as part of a switchover to Skype, which the company bought for $8.5 billion in 2011.

Even as it offers Google Chat to its Outlook.com users, Microsoft is warning consumers that Google's search engine and other services can't be trusted. The company has spending millions of dollars on a series of critical ads that began appearing online, in print and on television about six months ago.

Some of Microsoft's recent advertising attacks have been aimed at Google's Gmail, the foundation for Google Chat.In a marketing campaign dubbed "Scroogled," Microsoft lambastes Gmail for scanning the texts of emails to decipher what's being discussed so ads on related topics can be displayed alongside the electronic conversations. While depicting Google as an obnoxious snoop, Microsoft's ads urge people to switch to the less intrusive approach of Outlook.com.

Since the service's debut nine years ago, Google has never tried to conceal that it uses computers to parse the discussions within Gmail correspondence.

No ads are shown in live discussions on Google Chat, but marketing messages can be displayed if the conversations are saved, according to Google's policies. As it does with Gmail, Google's computers scan the context of the saved chats to help pick out which ads to show. That practice didn't deter Outlook.com from linking up with Google Chat.

"We do not have any queasiness about adding Google Chat," said Dharmesh Mehta, Outlook.com's senior director. "We think it's important to give people choice so they can make their email more personal. It also gives people one more reason to switch from Gmail to Outlook.com."

Microsoft believes it already has dented Gmail since it converted its Hotmail.com users and other email accounts operated under other domain names, such as MSN.com, to Outlook.com earlier this year.

The company, which is based in Redmond, Wash., says it now has about 400 million Outlook.com users. That's up from about 360 million users of Outlook.com and the Microsoft's other webmail services three months ago.Google, which is based in Mountain View, Calif., says it has more than 425 million Gmail users.

Hackers attack Russian media outlets

No comments :

Several media outlets in Russia's St. Petersburg city, and a popular online news broadcaster, Dozhd (Rain), came under hacker attack Thursday 'There has been a DDoS attack going since (Thursday) morning. Our IT service is doing everything possible to get the site back up and running. This is a very serious attack,' said the editor-in-chief of the St. Petersburg-based online newspaper.

Other sites affected include Novaya Gazeta and Ekho Moskvy in St Petersburg. Popular online TV network Dozhd posted a statement on Facebook, explaining the situation. 'Dear friends, the site www.tvrain.ru is temporarily unavailable - we are under DDoS attack.'

The statement described the attack as 'more serious than we initially thought', but reassured viewers that they were 'doing everything possible to get back online' and mentioned that some of their content were available online.

Russian internet users also reported problems with the nationwide sites for Novaya Gazeta, Ekho Moskvy and Russian Forbes. Many of the publications affected are viewed in Russia as less influenced by self-censorship and more closely aligned to the opposition than mainstream Russian media.

Later, the Khomyachki (Little Hamsters) group of 'patriotic hackers' posted a video on its site claiming responsibility for the attacks, saying they were timed to coincide with Victory Day.

Samsung Announces 5G Data Breakthrough

No comments :

Samsung Electronics said Monday it had successfully tested super-fast fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology that would eventually allow users to download an entire movie in one second. The South Korean giant said the test had witnessed data transmission of more than one gigabyte per second over a distance of two kilometers.

The new technology, which will not be ready for the commercial market before 2020 at the earliest, would offer transmitting speeds "up to several hundred times faster" than existing 4G networks, it said in a statement. That will permit users to "transmit massive data files including high quality digital movies practically without limitation", it said.

"As a result, subscribers will be able to enjoy a wide range of services such as 3D movies and games, real-time streaming of ultra high-definition (UHD) content, and remote medical services," it added.

Samsung said it had found a way to harness millimeter-wave bands which have proved to be a sticking point for the mobile industry to date. The test used 64 antenna elements, which the tech titan said overcame the issue of "unfavourable propagation characteristics" that have prevented data travelling across long distances using the bands.

Software to improve building safety in quakes

Software to improve building safety in quakes

A spanish software company is developing a computer tool that will help improve building safety in earthquakes and can also be used in constructionprojects by companies located in seismic zones.

The new aspect of this software, which is geared toward architects, engineers and construction firms, is that it is capable of calculating the effect that the facades, the partitions and the walls - which have a tendency to develop cracks in a quake - will have on the overall structure of a building.

The Arquitectura, based in the eastern Spanish city of Alicante and operating in more than 47 countries - mainly in Latin America, Portugal and North Africa - has been working on the product for a year, the firm's technical director, Carlos Fernandez, said.

The aim of the software, development of which is almost completed, is to better analyze the structure of a building and its behavior in the face of different seismic risks, Fernandez said.

This is 'one more tool that's going to contribute to improving the safety of ... buildings in seismic zones, but it's not the definitive weapon, it's not a panacea,' he said, adding that the project will have an international market because many professionals around the world will be able to make use of it.
