YouTube has launched a trial scheme for paid channels on its website. Around 53 channels will soon require a paid monthly subscription, with prices starting from 99 US cents a month ($1.18), with the average price around $US2.99 ($3.57). Although the world's largest video site has rented and sold movies and television shows from major studios since late 2008, most people watch videos on YouTube for free.

It is the first time YouTube is introducing all-you-can-watch channels that require a monthly fee, putting forward a challenge to established services like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, all of which have millions of paying customers. Each of YouTube's channels will offer a free 14 day trial, with some offering discounted annual rates.Subscribers can pay using either their credit cards or through Google's own Wallet service.

The popular video-sharing site, which is owned by Google, said the launch was part of an effort to enable "content creators to earn revenue for their creativity". "This is just the beginning", YouTube said in a blog.
